In his own words:

My name is Anthony Echols, inmate #75531.

I have been incarcerated since 2000 for murder. I grew up in Gardnerville, Nevada. I drew when I was younger, but drifted away from it over time. I began drawing again after arriving at Ely State Prison.

I was drawn to western art after being given a few western magazines from another inmate, and it became the style that felt most honest to me. Through my work, I hope to remind people that those of us who are incarcerated are still human. We are more than our worst decisions, and many of us continue striving to grow and become better men than we were when we came in.

Anthony’s story is also shared in the book Letters from My Father’s Murderer: A Journey of Forgiveness by Laurie A. Coombs — the daughter of his victim — who, by God’s grace, chose forgiveness.
